Local Health Care Provider Awarded Sagamore Of The Wabash

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS - William Dugan Jr., M.D., a medical oncologist/hematologist and pioneer of Kosciusko Community Hospital's oncology program, received the Sagamore of the Wabash last week. The award is the Indiana governor's highest award and was presented to Dugan by Dr. Robert LaSalle, a retired family physician from Wabash County Hospital.

The award is given to those who have provided distinguished service to Indiana and includes a plaque, lapel pin and a letter of commendation from the governor. Former Wabash Mayor Robert McCallen nominated Dugan for the award for his continued dedication in the field of oncology and for providing cutting edge treatment to cancer patients.

Dugan is co-founder and medical director of Community Cancer Care, Indianapolis, KCH's partner in oncology services. He worked with local physicians and nurses at KCH to create a partnership with Community Cancer Care, which enables the hospital to offer state-of-the-art cancer care. Dugan continues to be part of that medical team, providing oncology services to the Warsaw community.

Other recent honors for Dugan include being named "Health Care Hero" in the physician category by the Indianapolis Business Journal and being named one of the top doctors in Indianapolis by his peers in an Indianapolis Monthly magazine survey earlier this year.

The Sagamore of the Wabash award was created during the term of Indiana Gov. Ralph Gates, who served from 1945-49. Recipients include astronauts, U.S. presidents, ambassadors, artists, educators, musicians, political leaders and ordinary citizens who contribute to Hoosier heritage.
