Local Groups Work To Create Compost Site

Posted

What are you going to do with those piles, bags or boxes of leaves?

If the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District board and Superior Excavating approve a public/private parternship contract at the board's December meeting or thereafter, there will be a site to compost leaves and other yard waste at Superior Excavating.

Marsha Eikenberry, KCSWMD director, told the board Wednesday the compost site will be an opportunity for the county to dispose of yard waste without burning it. Other than the city of Warsaw, Superior has the only other permit in the county to develop a site, she said.

To create the site, Superior Excavating needed help to develop it, Eikenberry said. KCSWMD applied to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management for a grant for a windrow turner. The turner helps compost waste faster. An IDEM grant was received that will pay half of the cost of the $200,000 turner.

Eikenberry said as the site is developed, they want to talk to municipalities so the towns and cities can use the site to compost yard waste. The district also will provide vouchers to the general public as an incentive for them to dump their yard waste there. A way to give out the vouchers has yet to be determined, she said.

"Most of (the) material will come from industry" and municipalities, said Eikenberry.

In other business:

• A special public meeting is scheduled for Nov. 29 at 1 p.m. for an additional appropriation and to publicly determine the plans for the Union Street property. The board will decide whether to lease or buy the property for a permanent household hazardous waste site and district office.

• A joint December KCSWMD city advisory council and board meeting will be at the Ramada Inn on Dec. 13 from noon to 2 p.m. There will be a brief business meeting, an education presentation and legislative information from State Rep. David Wolkins.
