Local Golfers All Survive State's First Round

FRANKLIN -ÊWarsaw boys golf coach is a man of his word.

After his Tigers won Friday's regional, the 13th-year skipper said Warsaw was ready to play for a state championship. At Wednesday's first round of the state finals at Legends of Indiana in Franklin, Warsaw played like it.

On a day temperatures climbed into the 90s, the only thing hotter was the golf being played.

The Tigers finished the day with an 18-hole score of 301, leaving them tied for fourth with Bloomington South.

"We're only seven strokes off the lead, really that's only one stroke per man," Turner said. "On this course, in the state tournament, that's pretty good."

Mishawaka Marian leads after one day with a score of 294, followed by Zionsville at 295 and Culver Military Academy at 299.

Playing as an individual, recent Tippecanoe Valley graduate Andy Martin advanced to today's second round with a 71.

"This is just like Chestnut Hills, it's set up good for me," said Martin. "You have to play aggressive and know where your ball is going. From there it's just a little wedge."

CMA's Robert Davidge turned in the day's best score, firing a 4-under 68. His score was one stroke shy of tying Fuzzy Zoeller's record set in 1970 while playing for New Albany. Mishawaka Marian's Cole Isban and LaPorte's Steven Love are tied for second at 69.
