Local Girl Recognized For Heroic Actions

Kosciusko County Commissioners and County 911 Director Tom Brindle recognized a young hero Tuesday during the commissioners' regular meeting.

Brianne Johnson, 12, Warsaw, was woken up by her sister at 1:30 a.m. Jan. 29 because her mother, Anita Johnson, was very ill and needed medical attention.

Johnson's father, Troy Johnson, was working third shift and she was unable to contact him by phone."I called 911 and stayed on the line," Johnson said. "I just had to talk with them and tell them what was going on."

Johnson was able to describe her mother's condition to the dispatcher, receive instructions to help care for her mother, and prepare the scene for the arrival of emergency medical personnel.

Johnson said she got the family's pets out of the way and unlocked the doors of the house, enabling the emergency personnel to get to her mother as quickly as possible and take her to the hospital for the care she needed.

Johnson's parents attended the meeting with her and said they were very proud of their daughter. Brindle and the commissioners presented Johnson with a certificate and a medal in honor for her actions and ability to keep a cool head in an emergency situation.
