Local Food Pantry Bare

Local Food Pantry BareTwo freezers and a refrigerator were empty Wednesday afternoon at Salvation Army.

At this time last year there were only two cans of green beans and one can of applesauce on the pantry shelves.

The Salvation Army currently is in need of donated meats and canned goods, according to Salvation Army Captain Dale Brandenburg.

"United Way of Kosciusko County gave us a $5,000 matching grant last November to purchase food for the pantry, but the money ran out last month," Brandenburg said.

He said the pantry has served 800 more families this year compared to last year. The Salvation Army's budget year begins Oct. 1 and runs through July 31.

The Salvation Army's food pantry has served 50 families per day this month.

"The goal is to be able to provide families with at least three meals and help meet their food needs so they have money to pay their bills," Brandenburg said.

He said unemployment checks have run out, and it is becoming difficult for families to put food on their tables.

People can drop off food donations at the Salvation Army Mondays through Fridays from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m.

The food pantry serves approved Salvation Army clients once a month, and also offers a bread pantry once a week.

Financial donations also are being accepted and can be mailed to Salvation Army, 501 E. Arthur St., Warsaw, IN 46580.

Checks are to be made payable to Salvation Army with food pantry in the memo line.

Volunteers also are needed to help sort and distribute food. Call Ken Locke, community ministries director, at 574-267-5361 to become a volunteer.
