Local Float Garners AccoladesChildren from the Little People Daycare in Mentone recently had a float in parades around Northern Indiana.
And the praise has rolled in.
The float created by Pam Hiers and her husband Robert Hiers has been the stage for a show put on by the kids of the day care.
Wednesday, the float was given the first-place honor for the South Bend Memorial Day Parade. The float was in six different parades recently and it, along with the show kids have put on, has caused a big response.
"When we received our award (Wednesday) a woman stood up, and what the kids did was unbelievable, and that at one point during the parade she looked over and saw her 34-year-old son with tears rolling down her face," said Pam Hiers.
The float has children on it dressed as members of the different armed forces as well as firefighters and police.
With Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an American" playing, the children remain silent with their heads bowed during the verse.
Then when the song reaches its chorus the child lift their heads and begin singing along.
"People were clapping, cheering, crying," said Pam Heirs.
The float has been in parades the past couple of years, winning first place and the judges award in its first year at Plymouth's Blueberry Festival.
