Local Excavator Gives Presentation To Waste District

In an effort to make more people aware of their concrete, asphalt and brick recycling, Kerry and Tom Groninger from G&G Hauling & Excavating Inc., gave a presentation to the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District city advisory board Tuesday.

"We're looking to get out and get more material to recycle," Kerry said.

He said their company can recycle more than 1,000 tons a day. They recycle most materials around the Warsaw area and are looking to expand to satellite sites such as Syracuse and Pierceton. The only reasons towns and companies outside Warsaw don't use G&G for their construction recycling needs, he said, is because of distance. Satellite sites would eliminate that problem.

Kerry also said recycling concrete, asphalt and brick helps the community and is good for the environment. The end-product is used mostly for commercial and industrial sites.

"When we process the material, we're actually making different materials," Kerry said.

Currently, the city of Warsaw and companies like R.R. Donnelley and Zimmer use their end-products, he said.

"We've talked to the county about whether it will meet their specs, but it's a little more expensive (for them)," he said. The material they produce, though, is of higher quality, he said.

When and if G&G begins looking for satellite sites, Kerry said, they may need only an acre or two, but there are different considerations that also must fall into place.

"It's got to be someplace where it can be gated and monitored, otherwise you have a dump," he said.

Kerry said he wanted the KCSWMD to draft a letter recommending their recycling work. KCSWMD Director Marsha Eikenberry said she will contact town boards to see if there is an interest in meeting with the Groningers about satellite sites.

G&G is at 3567 W CR 100N, Warsaw.

In other business, Eikenberry said Household Hazardous Waste Day will be held May 15 at Zimmer parking lot on the west end of Boggs Industrial Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
