SYRACUSE - The local impact of recently announced layoffs by auto parts supplier Dana Corp., the largest employer in Syracuse, is unknown so far, according to the human resources manager.
Dana employs 395 people at the Syracuse facility. The company said it will close plants and cut 11,000 jobs.
Phil Lund, human resources manager in Syracuse, said Friday, "We're waiting to hear from our corporate offices in Toledo, Ohio." He said he expects to receive more detailed information in a week or two.
As a corporation, Dana employs approximately 75,000 people. The announced cut of 11,000 jobs affects 15 percent of the work force and will be accomplished through plant closings and consolidations. About 30 facilities are being evaluated and the company also will look at outsourcing some operations, officials said.
About 10,000 cuts were made within the last two years because of an oversupply of vehicles and slow U.S. sales. According to Dana chairman Joe Magliochetti, "We have devoted significant effort to scaling our operations for lower production forecasts. Unfortunately, recent events require that we quicken the pace and make even further reductions."
