Local Drama Group Recognizes Victims' Rights Week

Posted

WINONA LAKE - To promote awareness of domestic violence and abuse, the drama group at Celebration Church, with assistance from Becky Moreno and the Warsaw Victim Service Center, will present the play "Barred from the Hunter" April 15 and 16 at 8 p.m. at the church.

The one-act play, written and directed by local dramatist Bob Firari, focuses on one woman's experiences as a victim of domestic violence. The abuse is identified through flashback scenes depicting how signs of violence were ignored. The purpose of the play is to identify violence and encourage victims to seek help.

Moreno said, "The play depicts only one woman's situation and experiences. Domestic violence crosses all socio-economic lines, educational levels and religions - professionals, doctors, the unemployed and high school dropouts. Religious and wealthy people are not immune."

Although the play contains no specific acts of violence, parental discretion is advised due to the mature subject matter. Nursery and child care will be provided.

George Paiva, Pierceton, will narrate during the play and lead a short period of open discussion following the play. Refreshments will be served.

There is no charge, but a free-will offering will be accepted, with all proceeds going to the Victim Service Center. Seating is limited, and early arrival is suggested.

The open dress rehearsal April 14 also is available for those unable to attend April 15 or 16.

Celebration Church is at 1289 S. CR 250E, Winona Lake, one-half-mile south of U.S. 30E on CR 250E, turn south at the Shell station.
