Local crews kept busy; no emergency declared

The National Weather Service says the area can expect 1-2 inches of new snow accumulation today, with an 8 mph wind reported at the airport.

A snow emergency was not declared in the county despite slippery road conditions. It is up to the county commissioners to declare a snow emergency, at which time all but emergency traffic is told to keep off the roads.

That step was not taken during this storm. But police were urging all drivers to take extreme caution if traveling and avoid any unnecessary trips.

Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department spokesman Chad Hill said this morning there were 64 slideoffs, but no serious injuries.

According to the Kosciusko County Highway Department, snowplow crews working throughout the night have encountered several areas in the county where drivers have abandoned their vehicles, blocking the road.

At 5 a.m., it was stated that only two wrecker services were in operation for the entire county. At that time, crews were working to keep all EMS routes open throughout the county.

There was no information available early today from the Warsaw City Street Department, although crews have been busy throughout the night.

According to Lacey Francis, street department supervisor, city crews started early Tuesday, with crew shift changes at 7 p.m., midnight, and 3 a.m.

Francis said Tuesday evening crews would continue to work throughout the night to clear city streets.

No serious injury accident were reported throughout the county during the storm.
