BURKET – Members of three local churches carried a cross recently to reflect what it was like for Jesus to carry a cross.
Gary Loy, Burket United Methodist Church pastor, came up with the idea for his church members to carry a cross from the church to downtown Mentone April 7.
Loy invited Beaver Dam United Methodist Church and Akron United Methodist Church members to also carry the cross.
Men, women and children carried the eight-foot cross for approximately five miles.
Loy said the cross-carrying relates to a Bible passage.
The Bible in the book of Mark chapter 8, verse 34 states: “Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
“People often think to take up their cross they have to suffer, but carrying a cross means to follow Jesus,” Loy said.
He said to carry a cross a person must be willing to take up the cross every day, not just on Sundays.
