Local buying encouraged

Posted

To avoid what Warsaw School board member Deb Wiggins calls micro-managing, she proposed her own resolution at the special school board meeting Monday on school administrators purchasing awards locally.

An original proposal for a resolution to encourage local buying was discussed at the May 16 board meeting. The idea for the resolution came from board member Chuck Sauders.

Wiggins' motion states that the board recognizes there are cases "in which funds used for school purchases are raised locally and should be spent with local vendors when they offer the best price." But in order for the board to avoid micro-managing the school administration's affairs, the board directs the superintendent to create a policy or directive for staff to extend an invitation to local vendors to bid on all school purchases. The policy/directive is to be in the administrative handbook and to begin and become effective within 30 days.

Wiggins said she felt the intent of the original idea of encouraging school administrators to buy locally is "excellent."

The resolution was approved unanimously.

The Warsaw School Board meets regularly at 7 p.m. in the Central Instructional Materials Center Training Room, 1 Administrative Drive, Warsaw, on the third Monday of every month. Board members are Wiggins, Cathy Folk, Tammy Dalton, Gene England, Ron Yeiter, Sauders and Dan Robinson.
