INDIANAPOLIS - Dreaming and waiting for the state finals, the wait may have been too long for Warsaw junior Kyle Boley.
After a three-and-a-half hour delay because of rain, the pole vault competition, which was originally slated to start at 3 p.m., finally got underway Friday at IUPUI's Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis and lasted well after the final running event was complete.
After all was said and done, Boley cleared 14-6 and came away with a seventh-place finish.
The youngest of three Boley brothers to compete in athletics at Warsaw, Kyle cleared 14-6 on his first attempt but failed on all three attempts at 15-0.
He cleared 15-3 in practice on Monday when conditions were drier and when he didn't have to sit around and wait for hours.
"I'm a little disappointed in seventh," said Boley. "Fifteen feet would have got me in the top five for sure. Having to sit around and wait, my feet are soaked, it's a lot harder to run like that."
Said first-year Tiger coach David Hoffert, a Warsaw state finalist himself, "I thought Kyle did a great job. He just got better and better as the year went on. I really think this is the start of great things.
"I expect bigger and better things out of him next year."
Just as Boley was disappointed, so were other area competitors.
Wawasee's 3200 relay team of Ryan Stichter, Paul Perales, Eric Gingerich and David Slabaugh went into Friday's state finals seeded second.
While the Warrior foursome ran its best time of the year, a speedy two-mile time of 7:54.98, it was only good enough for eighth place.
"We ran our best time of the year, beat it by three seconds," Stichter said. "We were seeded second but finished eighth. We're disappointed, but still we finished eighth in the state."
Individually, Stichter finished 10th with a time of 1:57.41 in the 800, an event he was third at in last week's Fort Wayne Wayne Regional.
"I was pretty disappointed with it," Stichter said. "I ran my best race of the year at the conference meet and it was all down hill from there. I was capable of getting in the top five, but not on this day."
He who many thought was capable of winning an individual state championship, Wawasee junior speedster Anthony Argentino had to settle for a pair of fifth-place finishes.
Seeded No. 1 in the 110 hurdles with his regional-winning time of 13.81 seconds, Argentino finished fifth last night in 14.85 seconds - a time that wouldn't have even met the state qualifying standard.
He came back later and finished fifth in the 300 hurdles, an event he was seeded third in, with a time of 38.96 seconds.
The only Triton competitor in the field, Matt Anders won his heat in the 400 and finished 12th in the state with a time of 49.96 seconds.
Lawrence North won the team title with 69 points, followed by Fort Wayne Northrop, Ben Davis, Indianapolis North Central, Lawrence Central, Columbus North, Fort Wayne Snider, South Bend Clay, Harding, Warren Central and Bloomington North in the top 10.
Action is scheduled to get started again at 3 p.m. today at IUPUI in the girls state meet.
