Local Ballot Error Found

An error on some ballots in Warsaw School Board District 3 is confusing some voters with absentee ballots and creating headaches for the county clerk's office.

A glitch in the ballot printing for voters in Wayne Township precinct 5, which is in Warsaw school board District 3, has erroneously put the candidates for District 4 - Charles Sauders and Sterling Watkins - on the ballots for District 3. The District 3 candidates are Jim Folk and Dan Robinson.

According to Sharon Christner, Kosciusko County clerk, the error came to her attention Tuesday afternoon.

"I just found out about it," she said. "We're going to be changing the ballot so that it does reflect the right way."

Christner said 52 absentee ballots were sent out for Wayne 5, but not all have been returned. The ballots will be corrected before Election Day, she said.

Wayne 5 was the only precinct affected, Christner said.

To rectify the situation, Christner's office will call the people who already have voted by absentee ballot in Wayne 5 and ask them if they want to revote for school board.

If they do not vote again for the correct school board candidates, she said, the votes they already cast for the school board will not count because they were voting for candidates in the wrong district.

The districts in this year's election are Districts 3, 4 and 6. Included in those districts are:

• District 3 - Plain Township, precinct 4; Wayne Township, precinct 5; City of Warsaw, ward 1, precinct 1; ward 5, precinct 1. Candidates are James L. Folk and Dan Robinson.

• District 4 - City of Warsaw, ward 1, precinct 2; ward 2, precinct 1; Wayne Township, precincts 1 and 2. Candidates are Charles E. "Chuck" Sauders and Sterling Watkins.

• District 6 - City of Warsaw, ward 3, precinct 2; ward 4, precincts 1, 2 and 3; ward 5, precincts 2 and 3. The only candidate is Deborah Wiggins.

Further questions on the ballot should be directed to the county clerk's office at 372-2331.
