Local Attorneys Present Program To Middle School Students

Posted
The "Ask Me What is Great About America" presentation on Sept. 17 at Whitko, Edgewood and Lakeview middle schools was a program sponsored by the Indiana State Bar Association and the Young Lawyers Section.

The organizations strive to renew patriotism, promote values and maintain the spirit of a free country. The program celebrated Constitution Day.

Attorneys Tammy M. Keirn, Antony Garza and Scott A. Smith from Miner Lemon & Walston LLP presented the program at the respective middle schools. Teachers John Carroll (Whitko), Mike Howard (Edgewood) and Anita Wagoner (Lakeview) helped coordinate the event. The event was attended by more than 700 students total.

The students learned the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights allow each citizen of the United States to have certain fundamental rights. The attorneys discussed each Amendment in the Bill of Rights and how each applies.

Additionally, scenarios involving Harry Potter were used to give the students practical experience with the Amendments. The students were eager to discuss what rights, according to the Bill of Rights, they thought Harry Potter had in each scenario.

The attorneys additionally included real-life examples for them regarding search and seizure, cruel and unusual punishment and the freedom of speech. These discussions, real world examples and the Harry Potter scenarios helped the students see how important these rights are and why it is great to be in America.
