Local American Legion Posts Plan Pearl Harbor Ceremonies

Three local American Legions Friday will remember lives lost in Pearl Harbor.
Friday marks the 66th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, which was Dec. 7, 1941.
The attack on Pearl Harbor was a pre-emptive military strike on the United States Pacific Fleet base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack was by the Empire Japan's Imperial Japanese Navy on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, that led the U.S. to enter World War II.
Two aerial attack waves, totaling 350 aircrafts, were launched from six aircraft carriers with the intent to destroy the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
Warsaw's American Legion Post 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars post 1128 will hold a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day Ceremony Friday at 11 a.m. at the Post 49 Legion on the corner of Buffalo and Fort Wayne streets. The ceremony is open to the public.
Post 49 member Richard Dobbins will give a proclamation, and Post 49 Chaplain Tom Everett will say a prayer. The Post 49 honor guard will shoot rifles, and "Taps" will be played.
"The purpose of the ceremony is to keep awareness of what happened during Pearl Harbor," said Post 49 Adjutant Mike Davis.
North Webster's American Legion Post 253, Ind. 13S, will play an audio Friday at 7 p.m. of President Roosevelt giving his Day of Infamy speech to Congress Dec. 8, 1941, to declare war against Japan.
A moment of silence will be observed to remember the lives lost in Pearl Harbor.
Karaoke with Don Lindlag will begin at 8 p.m.
"The purpose of the American Legion is to remember incidents of war and we thought it was appropriate to hold a service," said Post 253 Adjutant Bob Harding.
Syracuse Legion Post 223, 1806 S. Huntington St., will offer a free alcoholic beverage to World War II veterans Friday from 3 to 10 p.m.
