Lloyd Daniel Bowerman, 86, of 1009 E. Beer Road, Milford, died at 6 a.m. Jan. 20, 2009, in Lakeland Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, Milford.
He was born July 12, 1922, in Niles, Mich., to John D. and May Belle Cheney Bowerman. On May 29, 1943, in Riverdale, Ill., he married Lucille Martha Wilkens, who survives.
Living in Kosciusko County for the past 51 years, he served as a sergeant radio operator in the U.S. Army from 1942-46, during World War II in the 4025 Signal Corp Service in the S.W. Pacific. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars. He also received the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal, Victory Medal, Marksman Medal and a Presidential United Citation. A feed mill manager, he worked at Cargill Nutrena Feed, Mentone, for 34 years and Maple Leaf Farms, Milford, for 15 years. He graduate from Thornton High School, Harvey, Ill., and received his honorary professorship of agriculture economics from Purdue University. He was active in the Mentone Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and served on the Bell Memorial Public Library and Aeronautics boards. He was involved with the Boys Scouts, having served as an Explorer advisor and Scout master.
Also surviving are three sons: Lloyd John (and spouse Doris) Bowerman, Macau, China; Robert (and spouse Susan) Bowerman, Milford; and Bill (and spouse Jo Ann) Bowerman, Warsaw; a daughter, Linda (and spouse Robert) Hile, Warsaw; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Virginia Lucht, Warsaw. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Warsaw, with Pastor Stuart Floyd officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with military rites by members of American Legion Post 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars 1126, both in Warsaw.
