Shoppers will have the opportunity to find treasures during this year's annual Lincoln Highway Garage Sales.

The third annual Lincoln Highway Buy-Way sale will be Aug. 11 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Warsaw. Set up will begin at 6 a.m.The event is being sponsored by the Warsaw Community Development Corp. and the Kosciusko Lincoln Highway Committee.

The sale will be held along the route of the Lincoln Highway through Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, according to WCDC Director Carmen Lock.

She said the purpose of the event is to celebrate the Lincoln Highway's history.

"The Lincoln Highway is a historical highway and we are celebrating its birthday," Lock said.

The Lincoln Highway was the first coast-to-coast highway in the United States, reaching from New York to San Francisco, according to Ken Locke, state director for the Lincoln Highway Garage Sales.

The route stretched through Kosciusko County in the mid-1920s when it was changed to the national highway system.

The event was the vision of Carl Fisher, who founded the Indianapolis 500.

Downtown streets will not be closed during the sale, but drivers and pedestrians are advised to be cautious during the event.

New to this year's sale, the Warsaw Community Public Library will hold a book sale on its lawn, and the Warsaw Lions Club also will have a garage sale on the Kosciusko County Courthouse lawn.

Local churches, groups and families are invited to set up sale areas around Center and Lake streets to participate in the event.

Downtown merchants also will have items for sale on the sidewalks in front of their stores.

Suggested donation to help with advertising is $5 for each 8-foot space.
