Lincoln Elementary School received another honor Monday - the Title I Distinguisted School Award.
And the honor comes with a large grant.
Last week, Lincoln was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for being named as one of the 314 National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2009. To receive this distinction, schools must have at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that demonstrate dramatic improvement of student performance to high levels on state tests or nationally normed tests.Principal Cathy Snyder and Sharon Gallager will attend the National Blue Ribbon Award ceremony in Washington, D.C., Nov. 2-3.
Then Monday, the Indiana Department of Education informed Warsaw Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Craig Hintz that Lincoln has been awarded the Title I Distinguished School Award for exceeding its adequate yearly progress for two or more years. Lincoln will receive an academic achievement awards grant of $50,000.
The purpose of the Distinguished School Program is to recognize and honor those Title I schools that make adequate yearly progress two or more consecutive years or make the greatest gains in closing the achievement gap. The program also identifies Title I schools that are models of best practices for schools of similar demographics for school improvement.
Lincoln representatives also will attend the National Title I conference in Washington, D.C., Jan. 21-24 and will present at the Title I Fall Administrative Workshop.
Snyder told the Warsaw School Board Monday night that it's taken awhile for the award to sink in. She said it's a real honor.
"If it wasn't for the staff, parents and the students we have, we wouldn't make it," she said.
School Board President Deb Wiggins said the award is an honor and an example of why they are all there - to educate students.
