Lights Out

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

In Friday's paper, in the middle of a very sad story on the arrest of 3 persons on drug-related charges, this sentence appeared: "The [3 children, ages 2, 4, and 6] were found locked in a totally dark room, with no television or source of light."

Apart from the very strange notion that television bears any resemblance to light (a strong argument could be made that it is mostly darkness, in and of itself), this is a most bizarre statement: as if the presence of a television would have mitigated the abusive situation. Where in the world did this strange notion originate, and who checks Times-Union copy for logical sense, let alone ordinary common-sense?
