Lightning from Thursday night's storm caused a mobile home fire at Westhaven Estates. Around 1:10 a.m. today, lightning struck a tree, traveled along one of the tree's roots, and blew a hole in the mobile home's floor, starting a fire in the couch in the living room. According to Atwood Fire Chief Mike Harmon, the woman living in the trailer said she heard a loud bang and saw the fire on the couch. Two children were sleeping in a bedroom about 10 feet from the couch, but all four people in the mobile home escaped without injury. Once the Atwood Fire Department arrived, the fire was under control in about 20 minutes. Names of the residents were not available at press time. Damage from the fire is estimated at around $20,000.
