WINONA LAKE - The annual Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night Walk is Sept. 24 in Winona Lake.
The event begins at 5 p.m. with registration and food at Rodeheaver Auditorium. A program begins at 7 p.m. followed by a walk.The society's mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
Walkers raise funds that are donated to the society for blood cancer research and patient services.
In 2008, the walk raised more than $47,000. This year's goal is to raise more than $53,000. There were more than 40 teams who participated in the walk last year with more than 300 walkers.
On the evening of the walk, participants will walk along a one-mile route carrying illuminated balloons.
White balloons represent blood cancer survivors, red balloons are for supporters, and gold balloons are for individuals or teams walking in memory of a patient who had a blood cancer.
Bill Crane is this year's walk honoree for the walk. Crane was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in January 2008. He underwent treatment and is now classified as having low-grade leukemia. He will walk with his team "Team Running Bird."
