Library Reviews Internet Policy

Posted

State law requires the Warsaw Community Public Library to review its Internet policy every year.

Library director Ann Zydek attended the Indiana Public Library Association Leadership Workshop in Bloomington during the last week of October. One program discussed Internet access and intellectual freedom issues. Zydek had the library board look over the Internet policy at Monday's meeting and gave her recommendation to keep it as is. She asked the board to remember the policy is a living document and can be changed in the future.

"We feel pretty comfortable with our existing policy," Zydek said.

The policy includes statements concerning minors (anyone under age 18). Minors must have signed permission of a parent or guardian and the policy also recommends minors be supervised by a parent or guardian.

The board approved Zydek's recommendation to keep the policy as is for now.

In other business:

• The Limited Use/Limited Application elevator is almost finished.

"If everything goes well, maybe by the end of the month," said Zydek.

The library is also working on improvements to prevent the water damage from September from happening again. The library suffered $15,000 worth of damage.

At the last meeting Zydek said the board has three options to consider for fixing the leak problem: adding a pump with a generator backup, modifying the gutter system to handle a larger volume of rainwater or adding a protective roof over the ramp and stairs.

Zydek presented an estimate of 180 days to make the improvements, and the library's insurance will cover up to $15,000 of the cost. Zydek and facilities manager Rick Ellsworth met with civil engineer Larry R. Long Associates on Oct. 17 to assess the problem and his services.

• The board held an executive session right before the board meeting to evaluate Zydek's job performance. Board member Ruth Jones reported Zydek's performance to be "very satisfactory."

• Deb Sprong's newspaper journalism class of Grace College attended the meeting as a class assignment.

The library board members include: president Mark Morrison, Larry Chamberlain, Joel Curry, John Yingling, Ruth Jones, Irvin Lindemuth and Caroline Nye.
