Library Director Seeks To Improve Cultural Awareness

Posted

Warsaw Community Public Library Director Ann Zydek wants to see the library become more culturally diverse.

Zydek shared with the Library Board of Trustees Monday information gathered from a goals retreat she attended Jan. 27.

She said one of the most important goals is improving cultural awareness. She believes it is important to discover what the library can do to become more culturally aware. Each department should try to set goals on what they can work on to achieve cultural awareness, Zydek said.

"We are more than willing to open library service to those that are without library service," Zydek said.

She is concerned specifically with those in Kosciusko County who are unserved and those in Wayne Township that are under-served.

Zydek would like to see the library pull together as a team to achieve this goal.

In other business:

• Renee Sweeny, business manager, updated the board on a treasurer's report.

"There were a lot of claims," Sweeny said. "I was shocked."

Sweeny and board members went through the claim statement and briefly discussed health insurance for employees.

President Mark Morrison said the board is looking at April if they want to switch the health insurance plan. Currently it covers 19 employees and their families.

"We need another insurance committee to sit down and go through this," Morrison said.

No decision was made on the health insurance plan, but the board did approve the treasurer's report and claims.

• Zydek commended the board on their work and dedication to the library.

"I'm really proud of everyone's efforts," she said. "We have started the year 2000 in great form."

Zydek said she will continue to look at goals and what the library needs to accomplish this year.
