Library Director Gets Positive Board Review

Warsaw Community Public Library director Ann Zydek received a positive review by the board of trustees in executive session Monday, prior to the regular board meeting.

Board president Larry Chamberlain said the evaluation went well.

"We are blessed as a community to have you as a leader here," he said of Zydek. Her strong points were noted as knowing the staff well and communicating the library's services with the public.

Chamberlain also read a brief statement honoring military veterans to commemorate Veterans' Day. Zydek said the staff would proceed cautiously the first six months of next year with spending, due to the uncertainty of final budget findings. As the state undergoes reassessment, final tax levies are still in question. She said Gov. O'Bannon has indicated libraries whose county governments have undergone the reassessment process, like Kosciusko, will receive the same state funding as last year.

The library's share of County Option Income Tax is expected to be $16,000 less than originally projected.

The budget is "right on target," she said, with 77.21 percent spent, a figure that is usually at 83 percent this time of year.

In other business, the board:

• Welcomed a journalism class from Grace College, taught by Deb Sprong.

• Heard a $500 check was received from Wal-Mart to be used toward literacy services.

• Heard the second year of the Arts in the Library grant application was approved by the Dekko Foundation. Next year's theme will be music and will include fine art displays as well.

• Recognized employee David Todd, who is a member of the Indiana Army National Guard. Todd reported for active duty at Camp Atterbury Monday.

• Reviewed circulation statistics from a "typical" week, Oct. 21 through 28. The data showed 10,125 items were checked out at that time with visits by 5,042 patrons.

• Heard the sprinkling system installation is complete.

• Heard the Nov. 9 program with storyteller Mary Jo Huff was well received.

• Approved on first reading several changes to library policies in the fines and fees schedule and health and safety procedures.

Library board of trustee members are Larry Chamberlain, Mark Morrison, Joel Curry, Paulette Sauders, Tony Etienne and John Yingling. Ruth Jones was absent.
