Caring Community

Editor, Times-Union:
The community of Kosciusko County is a very caring and giving place to live. Recently, I organized a coat drive to benefit people in our community who were in need of warm winter wear. The response was beyond my expectations. Kerlin Motor Co. in Silver Lake was the coat drive and collection headquarters. The collection box was a Ford truck in the showroom and the coats were piled so high they nearly touched the ceiling. We collected over 500 coats.

Thanks to all of the co-sponsors and collection sites.

A sincere thanks to all who donated coats. Many of us have more coats than we need, what a glorious feeling to know someone will stay warm this winter because we shared something as simple as a coat.

Valerie Warner, Kerlin Motor Co. Inc.

'Outdoor Scene' Inappropriate

Editor, Times-Union:
I would like to make a few comments about John Davis' column "Outdoor Scene" that was printed under the heading "Santa's Reindeer Shot in Wyoming By Warsaw Hunters." The above appeared in the bottom half of the Times-Union Sports section on page one Saturday, Dec. 18, exactly one week before Christmas Day.

I do not happen to be the type of person who thinks that blasting Rudolph's red nose to smithereens is comical even in a fictional sense, and that wounding Santa in the derriere is a fit subject for great hilarity. There are many small children (and not so small children) who still believe in Santa Claus. In the kind of world we live in, I do not think the emphasis on guns, shooting and cruelty to animals and humans as shown throughout Mr. Davis' column in order to take a jab at President Clinton can be considered humor. I will have to admit, though, that the author is a master at name-dropping as I counted at least a dozen Warsawans listed as performing acts of cruelty against Santa and his herd.

In closing, I think the Times-Union used extremely poor judgment, and displayed a lack of sensitivity in scheduling the column to be published one week before Christmas.

Accident Victim Says Thanks

Editor, Times-Union:
I am writing to give a special thanks and special "Season's Greetings" to all the people that helped me and my sister when I had my truck accident Sept. 20. The accident occurred on Old Road 30, just past Little Big Horn Golf Course. In addition to the EMS, police and fire department, there were also many other people that stopped to help. I particularly remember the first lady that stopped and a gentleman that put socks or something on my head to stop the bleeding. I would also like to thank all the people who called, sent cards, helped with transportation, stayed with us, and most of all those who kept us in their thoughts and prayers. Thanks everyone.

Cori Calaway, Warsaw

Grave Situation

Editor, Times-Union:
Might the office have misplaced a letter that a Don Kaiser would have sent in several years ago, and found recently? Your Dec. 17 paper printed his letter about a "Madame Satan" (Madeline Murray O'Hair) who has been dead for more than a year!

Or, could it be that she has been resurrected from the dead and is now continuing to do her dirty work? Mr. Kaiser says that we shouldn't take this very GRAVE situation lightly. If she really has been resurrected from the dead it surely would be a very GRAVE situation! Right?

It makes one wonder where Mr. Kaiser has been the past several years.
