Editor, Times-Union: I felt it important to write this letter after reading the letter published on 10/9/01 from Fred Plastow titled "Trade in Mike Harden," in which he seemingly defends the far-out fundamentalist "Christian" Jerry Falwell.
After the terrorist attacks of September 11th I was totally offended to read what Jerry Falwell had to say in regards to those events. I wonder if Mr. Plastow is even aware of Falwell's statements. Will he defend him after reading the following? One would hope not.
Falwell told his audience on the Christian Broadcast Network that the terrorist attacks on on the U.S. were the result of the wrath of God at "the pagans, and the abortionists and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians." And the one-time presidential hopeful Pat Robertson, who was also hosting that same show, "The 700 Club," agreed with his comments. Those two gentlemen, and I will use that term very loosely, claim that pro-choice and pro-gay Americans inspired the hatred of a vengeful, punishing Lord.
Falwell crowed, "I point the finger in their faces and and say you helped this happen."
I am totally sickened by those statements and let's put the blame where it truly belongs - it had nothing to do with any of the above blameless people! It was a group of sick, vile, evil terrorists with no sanctity for human life that plotted and carried out the atrocities of September 11th - PERIOD.
Could it be - that the religious intolerance and extremism of Falwell and Robertson's sort is exactly what led to the man-made devastation of 9/11/01? Think about it.

Arab Screening
Editor, Times-Union: RE: Arab Screening TIME magazine (10/8/01 issue, received 10/6) contains the results of a TIME/CNN poll (pp. 28,29) relative to change in attitude which indicates, among other findings, that 49 percent of respondents would "... require U.S. citizens of Arab descent to carry an identification card issued by the Federal Government," and 49 percent are opposed. Nearly one-third (31 percent) of respondents favor allowing "... the Federal Government to hold Arabs who are U.S. citizens in camps until it can be determined whether they have links to terrorist organizations." Sixty-five percent are opposed.
TIME magazine has become more liberal over the 52 years I have subscribed. I suspect a Gallup or similar poll would show higher numbers, however I am not amongst those who favor internment.
Also, if we suffer a terrorist attack(s) similar to, or worse than, the Sept. 11 attack, we cam expect a rise in these numbers.
