Editor, Times-Union: I read your headline story concerning the refusal to allow Meijer to come to Warsaw with disgust at the shortsighted and greedy people on your city council.Ê
Greedy because they sided with Tony Silveus and his ilk. This is a man who has made himself wealthy by selling gasoline to consumers in Warsaw. For many years you could count on gas being anywhere from a nickel to a dime more expensive than the surrounding communities. As for the other merchants, grow up! The Internet is quickly making the local market more competitive and you will compete with the larger stores, like it or not.
Shortsighted because as I understand it, Meijer was willing to make several hundred thousand dollars of improvements to the area surrounding Husky Trail and U.S. 30. Now local taxpayers are going to have to come up with that money just to appease a few NIMBYS. Does anyone really believe that area will not be developed commercially?
I believe with the vote being as lopsided as it was that it looks like the "good old boy" network is alive and well in Warsaw. The rich are taking care of the rich and leaving it to the middle-class taxpayer to foot the bill. As for me, I already take my business to Meijer in Fort Wayne. The money I save more than pays for my gas and time.

Hang In There, Meijer
Editor, Times-Union: Hang in there, Meijer. I don't know if you have thought about it or not, but you could follow the fine example that our state and local governments follow. When they want to build something on a piece of property, they just condemn it or annex it. Then they go in and build what they want to build and no one can say anything about it. You might try doing that, they have been doingÊit for years, maybe you can do it, too. Good luck. Have a nice day.

Who Runs This Town?
Editor, Times-Union: Who runs this town of Warsaw? Is it the mayor? Is it the City Council? Is it people that play golf while we sweat at work? Do these people control our educators? Can a town like Warsaw ever grow in midst of threatening ligation and, better yet, scare tactics? Do certain home addresses get special recognition over other citizens in this town?
