Editor, Times-Union: Saturday, May 11th the 27 Kosciusko County track and field participants, two Bocce teams (one unified) and the 3 on 3 Basketball team traveled to Notre Dame to compete in the Special Olympics Area 2 Summer Games.
The track and field athletes came home with an outstanding collection of medals and ribbons. When the final tally was taken, there were 12 gold medals, nine silvers, 11 bronze, five fourth-place ribbons, two fifth-place ribbons and three sixth-place ribbons. In addition, the Unified Bocce team earned a gold medal and the other Bocce team earned a bronze medal. The basketball team battled their way to a fourth-place ribbon.
Wow! What a great job. If you know any of these athletes, please be sure to congratulate them on their fine effort. It costs you nothing but a few seconds of your time, will make them feel great about themselves and should make you feel good all under.
Most of these athletes will be taking part in the State Summer Games in Terre Haute on June 7, 8 and 9 as well as competing in bowling.
Gymnastics anyone? While in Notre Dame, we watched some Special Olympics Elkhart County gymnasts perform.
Could this be the next sport for Kosciusko County athletes? Do you know an athlete that would like to take part in the gymnastic and dance routines? Contact Kosciusko County coordinator Becky Walls for more information at 574-294-2962 or walls@maplenet.net
