Haines' Contributions

I would just like to take a moment to recognize the contributions that Steve Haines has made to the Democratic Party of Kosciusko County. Most people have no idea how much time and effort it takes to be County Chairman for the minority party, especially in the age when so many people prefer to take a free ride by claiming to be "independent" and not supporting either party.

Although Steve and I certainly have many political disagreements, I believe very strongly in the two party system. Of course as County Republican Chairman, I want to see the Republican candidate win every race, but competition strengthens both parties; and more importantly provides the best government for the citizens. So, believe it or not, I appreciate the contributions Steve has made to the Democratic Party.

The best of luck to Steve in his future endeavors. I am sure he will remain active in our community.

Michael L. Miner
Chairman of the Kosciusko County Republican Party

Stamp Out Hunger

Editor, Times-Union:
As a co-sponsor of the "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive by the National Association of Letter Carriers, United Way of Kosciusko County salutes their efforts as community leaders.

On Saturday, May 13, your local letter carriers will participate in this annual food drive to support your community and communities across the nation. Last year a total of 53 million tons of food was collected nationwide in this amazing effort to "Stamp Out Hunger."

Locally, approximately 5 tons of food was distributed to both The Salvation Army and Combined Community Services. This year Our Father's House will also be included to receive a portion of the gift of food.

The U.S. Postal Service will be collecting non-perishable items such as canned goods, cereal and rice. All they ask is that you bag your donation and place it by your mailbox Saturday morning to be picked up by your letter carrier. Your donated food will then be weighed and taken to a local food bank and finally distributed to local agencies.

United Way of Kosciusko County is proud to be a part of such a valiant effort to alleviate hunger in our community. As an organization committed to the life and vitality of Kosciusko County, United Way asks that you join the millions who will give across the nation and help "Stamp Out Hunger" in our communities. Doing Good Works!

Act Of Kindness

Editor, Times-Union:
I want to express my sincere appreciation for a kind act by our County Highway Department.

May 3rd, we had a funeral at our church. Death is always untimely and unkind. The road our church sits on, CR 325 East, was scheduled for repair. Road repair is sometimes viewed as an inconvenience when in actuality, it is making our roads safer and easier to access or use.

It was not a disruption of business I was concerned with but grief- stricken family members trying to find an alternative route to their loved one's service.

I spoke with the workers who had a job to do and were used to being griped at for inconveniencing people. My own brother was hit by a car while working on the Highway Department in West Virginia. He was nearly killed and injured for life. I appreciate your work.

The Department graciously decided to wait until after the funeral began to tear the road up for repair. Words aren't enough. Thank you.

Honor Veterans

Editor, Times-Union:
This letter is directed to our great community! May is the month set aside to honor our veterans - living and deceased. We need to thank the living veterans when we see them for preserving our freedom and helping other countries in their ventures to be free.

We also honor our deceased veterans by building memorials and placing flowers on their graves. We also place flags on the graves of these brave men and women. So whenever you're asked to help, please do it gladly - that's your small part of thanking them.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 49 will be having their annual Poppy Days May 12 and 13. We buy veteran-made poppies and distribute them to the public for a donation. This is our way of helping our veterans and their families.

So Warsaw and America, when you see our unit ladies or our auxiliary units all over America with their poppy cans, give generously and wear the poppy with pride. Thank you veterans wherever you are.

Recycling Improvement

Editor, Times-Union:
Hats off to the Kosciusko County Master Gardners and the Solid Waste Group for the beautiful flowers at our recycling bins. What an improvement! They really brighten up the place.

Thanks to all involved.
