LEESBURG - Thanks to a new computerized accounting system, the Leesburg Town Council will receive a simpler printout of the town's accounts.
Until now, all the town's accounts were figured by hand, and all invoices and accounts were listed on hand-written ledgers.Monday night, Town Clerk Melissa Robinson explained the new printouts to council members and told them how the system works.
"It makes (paying invoices and tracking accounts) much, much easier," Robinson said.
Later in the meeting, the town heard Veolia offered a two-year extension on the town's trash pickup services. The company offered a deal with the same services for the same price the town has been paying for two more years.
Council members unanimously approved a motion to continue the contract with Veolia. Since the service is less than $50,000 per year, the town was not required to advertise and go through the bidding process.
The council also approved a salary proposal presented by Robinson for the wastewater clerk position. Robinson is the town's wastewater clerk and will be paid $15,600 per year. This is in addition to the $8,250 she receives to be the town clerk.
The salary is based on an average of the salaries of wastewater clerks throughout the state.
The board approved the motion by a 2-0-1 vote. Ryan Robinson, Melissa's husband, abstained from the vote.
The board also heard an update on the progress of the sewer project.
"It seems to be on schedule," said Jay Tierney, a representative from GRW Engineering. "(The contractors) seem to be at or slightly below schedule. The contractor feels that they are on time, and they are bringing in extra crews to put grinder pumps in."
Tierney and board members noted the contractors seem to be doing a very good job with their work and seem to be contentious when working in people's yards.
"I have not heard one negative about (the contractors) yet," said Ryan Robinson.
Tierney said representatives from GRW have met with representatives from Warsaw Community Schools, architects and mechanical engineers about extending the sewer to the new Leesburg School. The group discussed standards, specifications and other aspects of the project.
The school corporation will pay the engineering fees as well as the cost to extend the pipe to the new school's location.
The town also is in the process of retaining someone to take care of sewer maintenance once the project is complete. A document outlining the scope of services needed to maintain the sewer had been drafted, and the town is now looking for proposals from people or companies interested in the job.
Letters will be sent to those interested in the project. Anyone interested in being considered for the position should contact the town office at 574-453-3315 for more information.
