Leesburg Students To Help Neighbors

Posted
LEESBURG - Sixth-grade students from Leesburg Elementary School will show they are good neighbors Friday afternoon.

Leesburg Elementary School and Embarq will partner to help Leesburg residents clean their yards for the Leesburg Elementary School Be A Good Neighbor Day.Approximately 90 sixth-graders will be put into small groups and walk to different locations in Leesburg to help residents rake leaves, clean flower beds and perform other outside tasks that the residents may not be able to do on their own.

"This is a good lesson for the sixth-graders," said Leesburg Elementary Principal Randy Dahms. "Leesburg is a small town, and this is a great opportunity for the sixth-graders to help people in the town."

The students, along with teachers, parental chaperones and representatives from Embarq, will leave the school around 1:30 p.m. and head to the homes where they will work for a couple of hours.

The letter sent to residents said, "As a school we want to give back to the community by being kind and caring. This is completely free as our desire is to do something for our community."

Residents who were interested in participating in the event filled out a form and returned it to the school. The school then made arrangements for the students to work.

The students primarily will be raking leaves during the event, but may perform other appropriate tasks. All tasks will be outdoors, and no students will enter the home where they are working.

About 10 residents will participate in the event, and some activity will take place at the Grace Brethren Church.

After the students are finished with their work, Embarq will provide pizza as a treat.
