LEESBURG - Quick thinking by a Leesburg second-grader was recognized by local authorities Tuesday.

Kosciusko County Sheriff Rocky Goshert made a surprise visit to Leesburg Elementary School to honor a second-grade hero.

Hunter J. Ross, a second grade student, was presented with a certificate of honor and appreciation after rescuing his sister from drowning on March 1.

Hunter's sister, Kaelyn Archey, while waiting for the school bus had dropped her lunch box on an ice-covered ditch-line near their home. When his sister attempted to retrieve it, she broke through the ice and fell up to her neck in the water-covered ditch.

Hunter was able to pull his sister from the water, who suffered from slight hypothermia.

Leesburg Elementary nurse Karleen Brennan contacted Goshert about the incident, and it was decided that Hunter should be honored for his quick thinking and immediate actions.
