Leesburg Reminds Residents Of Parking Ordinance

Posted
LEESBURG - Leesburg residents are being urged by their town council to abide by an ordinance that prohibits parking on the street between the hours of 3 and 6 a.m.

The ordinance, which has been in effect since 1979, states that any vehicles parked on the street between 3 and 6 a.m. can be towed at the owner's expense.

During the council's meeting Monday night, the board discussed the need to inform the rest of Leesburg's residents about the ordinance.

"Our ordinance is very clear cut, very concise," Tom Moore, board president, said. "The desire is not to tow. The desire is to have the street clear for snow removal."

Board member Doug Jones said, "We sweep the streets in summer, so this isn't something that will only be enforced in winter."

The board moved that one warning would be given to violators.

"We need the people to understand that there has been an ordinance in place for a long time and it's going to be enforced," Moore said.

The board also moved to adopt the Kosciusko County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan as it was presented by Emergency Management Director Ed Rock. The plan does not obligate the town in any way, but it does allow the town to apply for grants to fix potential problems before they happen.

Leesburg's storm water project is complete and there is one payment left to be paid.

The project required part of the town's historic brick roads to be torn up. The bricks were replaced, but a few are too high. Some of the money from the final payment will be withheld until the board can make sure the bricks settle properly after the ground thaws in the spring.

Leesburg resident Christine Archer spoke to the board about a Christmas program that will be Dec. 18. Volunteers from the community will light 2,000 luminarias, which will line Prairie and Van Buren streets.

"If it goes well we hope to have more next year," Archer said.

Refreshments will be served in the firehouse and Santa Claus will make an appearance in order to listen to any last-minute Christmas requests. The luminarias will be lit at dusk. Other activities are still being planned.

Funding for the event comes from the Betty Clover Memorial.

The next regular meeting will be Jan. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
