Leesburg opens bids to sell vehicles

LEESBURG - Sealed bids for three vehicles being sold by the town of Leesburg were opened Monday evening.

The vehicles will be sold for a total of $16,287. The town's 1993 GMC Jimmy will be purchased for $6,135, the 1985 dump truck will be purchased for $3,652, and the 1968 Ford tractor will go for $6,500.

Town council members said the vehicles sold for more than they expected.

The council also approved a resolution for a capital improvements plan that allocates $60,000 for street, curb and sidewalk infrastructure improvements.

The resolution was necessary to account for funds not used for the sewer project. The $500,000 grant the town is in the process of applying for dictates that all expenditures of more than $100 be explained. The resolution was approved 3-0.

In other business, the council:

n Heard from Street Commissioner Ed Riordan that the town's street sweeper was taken to Plymouth for repairs and needs all new skirts. According to Riordan, this is the first time the town has had to put any money into the sweeper. The council gave permission to have the street sweeper repaired.

n Heard that Town Clerk Melissa Robinson moved the money the town has had in a weekly certificate of deposit to a three-month CD at a higher interest rate. The CD will come due in December.

n Heard that Leesburg Grace Brethren Church will host a Bluegrass Festival Oct. 13 from 3 to 7 p.m. at 101 E. School St. The event will feature live music, kids' games, a chili contest and other events. Artists scheduled to appear are JD Woods, Don Taylor, John Miller and a Crying Shame.
