Leesburg Man Faces Charges After Battering Law EnforcementA Leesburg man is facing multiple felony charges after an incident Monday where he allegedly strangled and battered several police officers.
William T. Hogendobler, 33, of 102 E. Prairie St., Leesburg, and also showing an address in Goshen, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 8:08 p.m. Monday and charged with three Level 5 felonies for battery causing bodily injury to a law enforcement officer; strangulation, a Level 6 felony; two Level 6 felony intimidation charges; and criminal mischief, a Class A misdemeanor.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed Thursday in Kosciusko Superior Court III, on Monday, a Milford police officer, Claypool police officer and Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to 102 E. Prairie St., Leesburg, in reference to an unwanted person who possibly had a gun.
Upon arrival, police heard screaming and saw a woman running to the front of the residence, according to court papers.
The woman told police Hogendobler had broken into the camper she was living in and threatened to kill her, according to the affidavit.
When police were attempting to detain Hogendobler and put him in the back of a Milford squad car, Hogendobler allegedly began resisting. When police asked him about the gun, Hogendobler allegedly said he would rather “you guys kill me.”
According to the affidavit, when police told Hogendobler he was being charged with intimidation, Hogendobler said he never told the woman he was going to kill her then began banging on the squad car door and plexiglass and pushing the rear passenger side door open, causing a 4- to 6-inch gap between the door and the frame of the vehicle.
KCSO deputy Mason Teel opened the door to stop further damage, according to the affidavit, and that is when Hogendobler allegedly lunged out and grabbed Claypool Town Marshal Ben Sanders by the throat, choking and hitting him.
Police then began to physically subdue Hogendobler in the back of the police car, and Sanders deployed his taser, according to the affidavit. During the scuffle, Hogendobler is alleged to have hit Milford officer Travis Bays in the groin and face and also Teel in the groin.
Hogendobler allegedly said he “might as well do something to get in trouble” and continued to threaten police with remarks such as, “I’m going to f*** you up. I hope you guys are ready to die, because I am,” according to the affidavit.
En route to the jail, Hogendobler continued to threaten the officers, cause damage to the police vehicle by hitting and punching and kicking and also is accused of showing his genitals.
According to the affidavit, all of the officers suffered pain from Hogendobler’s attacks and Sanders’ face was bloodied.
Furthermore, an estimated $1,000 in damage was reported in court papers to the Milford police vehicle.
