Leesburg Looks At Grant Possibilities

Posted
LEESBURG - Leesburg Town Council approved the application of a new economic stimulus grant and heard an update on the sewer project during a meeting Monday night.

A resolution was passed to approve the application of a DR2 grant for disaster recovery. The grant could provide up to $1 million to help repair and improve the storm drainage in Leesburg. This would include additional inlets as well as gutter and curb repairs. In order to be approved, the grant writers need to supply evidence that repairs would help improve the economy in Leesburg. Anyone with a suggestion on how this might be done is encouraged to write a letter to the town council by Friday. Benefits for local businesses will be included, but damage to private property and improvement of the standard of living will not.

If this grant is not approved, the town will apply for a smaller grant that will take other reasons into consideration.

The board also heard a report on the wastewater collection and pumping system. The pump station should be completed sometime next week. However, the system cannot be used until the town is able to insure the system.

The required permit for the connection to the new system is $75. For information on how to get a permit, call the Leesburg Street Department office.

Connection dates are still under consideration. Council President Rick Stookey said he hoped they would have a tentative date by the council's July meeting. Before the connections begin, a letter will be sent notifying people of a hookup date and a list of contractors.

In other business, the council discussed the annual town garage sale, which will take place all day Saturday.
