Leesburg Hears Sewer Update

Posted
LEESBURG - In a short meeting Monday night, the Leesburg Town Council heard an update on the sewer project, named a president and made a request.

According to a status report from GRW Engineering, the sewer project is approximately 63 percent billed and the contract time is about 66 percent expired. Looking at those numbers, the project is slightly behind schedule, but that is not cause for much concern at this point.

After being off for the holidays, the construction crews returned last week to continue work on the sewer. Due to frigid temperatures this week, the crew will not be on site until at least next week, depending on the weather.

The sixth set of contractor pay claims was submitted. The town will pay the claim, totaling $169,230.50. The next progress meeting for the sewer project will be Feb. 9 at 2:30 p.m.

Jay Tierney, of GRW Engineering, said NIPSCO needs to erect a pole to get electricity to the pump station for the sewer. Tierney said he was going to see if the pole could be set in the easement along Ind. 15.

Board members decided to retain the 2008 officers in 2009. Rick Stookey will remain as president of the council this year.

The board also discussed what to do with branches and lawn debris until spring. The town is looking for a new large site to collect and store the branches for free until they can be taken care of in the spring. Anyone willing to help should contact Ed Riordan at 574-453-3315.

In other business, the council:

n Thanked Craig and Sue Charlton for putting up the nativity scene in town. The scene had not been used in several years, and the Charltons got it out and set it up this year.

n Thanked the fire department for putting the town's holiday decorations up and then taking them back down.
