Leesburg Elementary Named Regional Champion in State

INDIANAPOLIS – Students in Teresa Jordan’s sixth grade class at Leesburg Elementary School were named Northeast Regional Champions in the Second Annual Hoosier Math Cup contest sponsored by the Indiana Department of Education and Apangea Learning.

Apangea Learning is an award-winning provider of online supplemental math instruction.

Students in Jordan’s class worked on the Apangea Math program in class and at home to earn the highest student average of points per student in the region, beating all other competing schools and classes in their area. Together, the 19 students solved more than 21,000 problems and passed 472 math lessons; they spent an average of 21 hours per student working on the math program.

During November, 258 schools across Indiana competed in the Hoosier Math Cup, a contest to encourage kids to do math and have fun while learning the basic fundamentals of math. Nearly 26,000 students in more than 1,575 classrooms participated in the statewide contest solving more than 2.3 million math problems.

The students’ win marks the second Hoosier Math Cup win for Leesburg Elementary. Last year, Jordan’s sixth grade students won the state title in the contest.

Jordan’s students will be rewarded with a pizza party prize package, a class certificate signed by Dr. Tony Bennett, Indiana superintendent of public instruction, and a 2011 regional champion banner to display.

“Apangea’s Hoosier Math Cup is an excellent opportunity for students to participate in a fun-filled competition that challenges each and every one of them to reach for new heights of academic success,” said Bennett. “The successful efforts of Apangea to engage students throughout Indiana bring a new level of awareness to the importance of math achievement.”
