Leesburg Council Talks Maple Leaf Move

Posted
LEESBURG - Leesburg Town Council discussed the anticipated sale of the former Leesburg Elementary School to Maple Leaf Farms at its meeting Monday night.

The Warsaw School Board approved the sale Feb. 28 for $178,000.

At Monday's meeting, the Leesburg Town Council talked about the many benefits of having the business move its headquarters to Leesburg.

"It's a real plus for the town and the citizens of Leesburg," Council President Tom Moore said.

Maple Leaf will move 80 employees to its new facilities. This could have a positive impact on local businesses.

"That's 80 people who may not have been downtown before," board member Doug Jones said.

"We're looking forward to Maple Leaf being a part of Leesburg," Moore said.

In other business:

n Street Commissioner Brandon Queen reported there are approximately 15 tons of the salt-sand mixture left over from the season's snow removal supplies. The board discussed that this can be stored until next year. However, Queen will contact the supplier to see if the salt and sand can be returned to the supplier for a credit.

Queen also reminded Leesburg residents that they can carry sticks and limbs out to the curb for pickup. The sticks and limbs should only be storm debris.

"If you cut it down, it's your responsibility," Queen said.

Queen said he is also filling potholes as quickly as he can, and asked that residents continue to park off the street from 3 to 6 a.m. for street-sweeping purposes.

n The board discussed the current wording of the ordinance that regulates street parking between the hours of 3 and 6 a.m.

The current ordinance prohibits anyone from parking on the streets during those hours. The board would like to change the wording of the ordinance for clarification, and will be considering alternatives over the next month. They will discuss this topic again at the next meeting.

n The board members are keeping an eye on the bricks that make up Pearl Street.

Many people were not satisfied with the way the bricks were laid after the stormwater drainage project was completed. Some bricks are too high, while some are set too low in the road.

"Bricks will settle," Vice President Larry Richey said.

"I'm more worried about the low spots than the high spots," Jones said.

The board will keep an eye on the road and see how the bricks settle as the weather warms up.

n The board moved to purchase a laptop for the street commissioner.

The laptop will be used for spreadsheets and logs so the street commissioner can keep track of daily activities, inventory, etc.

n The Leesburg Grace Brethren Church will hold a "Spring Cleaning Garage Sale" April 2 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church. All Leesburg residents are welcome to bring things to sell.

A representative from the church said this garage sale will not compete with the townwide Garage Sale Day that happens every summer.

The board briefly discussed the town's Garage Sale Day and said that they would discuss it in further detail at next month's meeting so that people can begin planning for it.

The next meeting of the Leesburg Town Council will be April 11 at 6:30 p.m.
