LEESBURG – At the Leesburg Town Council’s monthly meeting Monday night, they discussed street repair bids, properties in violation of ordinances and the acceptance of a town ordinance against nepotism.
Leesburg Street Commissioner Brandon Queen informed the board that he received bids for repaving Smith and School streets and two new catch water basins. Last month the town council reviewed a bid from Ranger Materials to fix Smith and School streets, but the bid from Phend and Brown had not been submitted, so the board tabled the bids until this month. The Phend and Brown bid was available for review Monday night.
Shortly after the council started to look at the bids they noticed a problem.
“The bids are not bidding on the same jobs,” said Councilman Tom Moore. “I am not opposed to Phend and Brown resubmitting their bid in accordance to the specifications of the job.”
The council tabled the issue until next month, by that time they hope to have a resubmitted bid from Phend and Brown.
Queen also submitted the bids from Butt and Timmons for new catch water basins on Prairie and Jefferson streets. The council reviewed the bids and Larry Richey motioned to accept the bids. Doug Jones seconded the motion. The bids were accepted unanimously by the council.
Queen additionally informed the council that there were two homes that were in violation of city ordinances. “Both 108 E. Prairie Street and 209 E. Prairie Street are in violation of the grass or trash ordinances,” Queen said.
The council asked Queen if any of the houses in violation were previously in violation.
“108 E. Prairie Street,” said Queen. “I have given them a prior notice and it has been more than 30 days.”
At that time the council decided since Queen informed the homeowner that they were in violation previously, it was time to have town attorney Verne Landis write the homeowner a letter informing them of what could happen now.
Additionally the council planned to give the Unsafe Building Inspector Ed VanOsdel, the address of 108 E. Prairie St. as a home in violation of unsafe building ordinances.
Near the end of the meeting the council reviewed the draft of the town’s new anti-nepotism law.
“The state has mandated that each town make an ordinance against nepotism,” Moore said.
Jones and Richey both agreed that the ordinance was well written and Jones made the motion to accept the ordinance. Richey seconded the motion. The ordinance was unanimously passed.
As a reminder there is no parking on the streets of Leesburg between the hours of 3 and 6 a.m.
The Leesburg Town Council’s next meeting is July 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Leesburg Town Hall.
