LEESBURG - A large cistern in Leesburg used to hold water to fight fires has a leak.
Monday night during its regular meeting, the Leesburg Town Council discussed what to do with the structure. The town decided to get estimates to see what it would cost to repair the structure, but tabled a decision regarding specifically what to do with it.The cistern holds approximately 30,000 gallons of water when full. However, it currently is empty because water has leaked out of it.
There are several other cisterns in the town, and council members said they all probably need some level of repair. The council does not believe the town has enough money available in the budget to fix all the cisterns.
Council member Ryan Robinson said he will talk with Fire Chief Mitch Rader about the cistern to see how much it is used and if it really is needed.
In other business, the council:
n Heard the paving projects in town have been completed.
n Approved a motion to transfer money from the Economic Development Income Tax fund to the Local Roads and Streets fund to pay for repairs on Baseline Road.
n Gave Street Commissioner Ed Riordan permission to get someone to check the furnace in the town hall.
n Set trick-or-treat hours for Oct. 31 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
n Gave Riordan permission to look into the price of a plow attachment for the town's 1994 GMC pickup.
Leesburg Town Council members are Rick Stookey, president; Robinson and Jay Weaver. Clerk-treasurer is Melissa Robinson.
