WINONA LAKE - Lakeland Christian Academy is set to join the big boys - or girls.
Beginning in 2012, LCA Cougar athletics will be a part of the Indiana High School Athletic Association."This is my 11th year at LCA, and it's been a topic off and on," LCA athletic director Tim Yocum said. "We just feel like the time is right. More of the Christian schools are going that way. Because of that, the competition is weaker in the Christian league and tournaments."
LCA filed its application to join the IHSAA on Aug. 1 and after the IHSAA's August meeting, the school learned it would be a probable member.
Before becoming a full-fledged IHSAA member, LCA will be on a probationary status for two years. If LCA abides by the rules, the school will join the association in 2012.
"They're not going to touch the maximum amount of games we play this year," Yocum said. "In 2011-12, we'll have to be able to abide by the maximum amount of games we can play per sport."
As far as participating in Christian-league athletics, the school may still take part in them as long as they take part before the respective sport's postseason.
Because the school doesn't have football, choosing a conference may be tough, but the school is currently in the Northern Indiana Soccer Conference.
"We're interested in getting into a conference, but we're not sure which one," Yocum said. "Some schools have had trouble getting into conference because of football."
The Cougars have had success participating in Christian tournaments, but going against public schools, the success has been more limited. However, Yocum feels the move will be beneficial.
"It gives us higher visibility in the area," Yocum said. "Aside from taking part in the IHSAA tournaments, it brings more appeal for schools to schedule us if they know we belong. It also gives the kids more exposure for scholarships. It will even give us more credibility."
