Lakeland Christian Academy National Honor Society students did more than serve food at the First United Methodist Church community soup kitchen Wednesday. They also raised money for the groceries, made and served the food and cleaned up afterward. Teacher Carol King said about 28 juniors and seniors participated yesterday in the soup kitchen. She said the school had some days where students could donate money to “break” the dress code. That raised about $200. Tuesday afternoon, a few of the students then went grocery shopping for the lunch. The LCA students arrived early to the church Wednesday morning, prayed and then started the cooking process. Lunch included spaghetti with meat or alfredo sauce, tossed salad and garlic bread. The students made lots of cookies and brownies, and the drink was milk or water. Approximately 140 people were served meals Wednesday. “We’ve been doing it several years with National Honor Society and the kids love doing it. It’s always fun,” said King. Senior Ross Wallen said volunteering at the soup kitchen was important “to help these people out any way we can.” Having participated for two years, Wallen said he’s concerned with helping others. “It just humbles me and makes me grateful for what I have,” he said. Wallen and senior Stephen Danielan both said they would continue working at soup kitchens beyond high school. “I think it’s important, since we’re a Christian organization, to show Christ’s love and help them out as much as we can,” Danielan said. “It’s humbling. I think it’s fun to see just how much a meal means to different people.” “I think it’s really important with the resources we have to come here and serve and make a difference in the lives of these people, as servants of God,” said senior Johannah Bramlett. “I really enjoy doing this,” she continued. “I feel it really brings me joy and happiness to make a difference in their day. It’s just really fun for all of us. It brings us all together.” First United Methodist Church is at 179 Indiana St., Warsaw. The community soup kitchen is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Wednesday. The meals are free to those who need it. The organizations who come in host the soup kitchen at their own expense. The church has a sign-up sheet for churches or other organizations to provide the meals.
