LCA Leads Local Roundup With Labor Day Draw In Plymouth

PLYMOUTH — On the last day of the annual Blueberry Festival in Plymouth, the Lakeland Christian Academy boys soccer team played to a 3-3 draw with Winamac.
Taking part in the annual tournament during the festival, LCA’s Weston Clemens scored two goals and Radonja Pesic scored another, earning the draw, moving the Cougars’ season record to 1-5-1.
In the goal for LCA, Drew Nieveen had eight saves.
LCA hosts Class 1A No. 11 Argos Thursday.

Saturday in Nappanee
The Manchester boys cross country team had the top runner at Saturday’s NorthWood Invitational, but had to settle for eighth place out of nine teams. Manchester’s Matthew Fahs-Brown won the invitational in 17:09, but the Squires’ next highest finish was Tristan Fields’ 54th. John Glenn won the invitational with 48 points, while Manchester tallied a 234 and Triton finished fourth with 123 points. Triton’s top performer was Derek Johnston, who placed 19th in 19:03, followed two spots later by Bryce Wanemacher in 21st place (19:11). Triton travels to take on Bremen and LaVille today and Manchester hosts its own invitational Saturday.

At Saturday’s Prairie Heights Invitational, 20th-ranked Fort Wayne Dwenger won the title with 48 points and Wawasee finished third with 89. West Noble’s Brandon Arnold helped his team finish second by taking first overall in a time of 16:23. Wawasee’s Adam Doll finished third at the meet, crossing the finish line in 17:07, followed by teammate Zach Cockrill in 17:38, good for sixth place. Wawasee will take part in Saturday’s Marion Invitational.

At the annual DeKalb Baron Classic, the Warsaw girls cross country team finished fifth out of 11 teams Saturday. Sixth-ranked Carroll won the event with 26 points, followed by 16th-ranked Northridge (75), 13th-ranked Fort Wayne Concordia (97), Huntington North (124) and 25th-ranked Warsaw (149), rounding out the top five. Warsaw’s top finisher was Allison Miller, who finished 12th in a time of 20:03. Warsaw hosts the Tiger Invitational today on the new course at the high school.

The Triton and Manchester girls cross country teams finished seventh and eighth, respectively, at Saturday’s NorthWood Invitational. Concord won the nine-team event with 46 points, while Triton scored 198 and Manchester finished with a 210. Running the course in 20:22, Elkhart Christian Academy’s Kayla Casaletto finished first overall. Triton’s top performer was Courtney Burns, who finished 27th (24:48) and Manchester was paced by Trista Hill’s 30th-place finish (25:28). Triton hits the road today to take on Bremen and LaVille in Northern State Conference action and Manchester’s next meet is its own invitational Saturday.

Hosting Class 2A No. 12 Mishawaka Marian Saturday afternoon, the Warsaw girls soccer team earned a 2-2 draw. Getting the draw against the 2012 Class 1A state champions, Brooklyn Jackson netted two goals, one on a free kick and the other off an assist from Danielle Hutcherson. Warsaw goalkeeper Abby Schue posted 10 saves in the contest. The 2-2-1 Lady Tigers are in Northern Lakes Conference action today at Goshen.

Lakewood Park Christian won Saturday’s 20th annual Manchester Volleyball Tournament. In the round-robin tournament, Lakewood Park posted a 3-0 record, while Tippecanoe Valley went 2-1, Tri-Central was 1-2 and Manchester finished 0-3. En route to the title, Lakewood Park defeated Valley 25-18, 25-21, Tri-Central 25-17, 25-18 and Manchester 25-16, 25-11. On the day, Valley was led by Caylie Teel’s 19 kills and eight digs and 3.5 blocks, as well as Tenaya Shull’s 29 assists and five aces. For Manchester, Cierra Carter had nine kills, Rae Bedke posted 34 assists and Cali Spann led the way with 17 digs. Tippy Valley is at South Bend St. Joseph today and Manchester travels to Wawasee today.
