KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Lawrence Stieglitz, 89, Kalamazoo, Mich., died Jan. 12, 2014. He was born Oct. 25, 1924, in Milford, to Henry and Anne Zimmerman Stieglitz. On June 10, 1951, he married Ruth Marilyn Fogle, who survives. Known as Larry, he was the first of six brothers to enter the military where he served as an Army medic during World War II. When he returned from the Army he graduated from Indiana University and taught high school biology for one year. Later he graduated from I.U. medical school, specializing in child psychiatry. He worked at Women’s Hospital in Detroit until they moved to Kalamazoo where he worked at The Child Guidance Clinic. Later, he took a position working with adolescents in the Pheasant Ridge Adolescent Unit of the State Hospital. He was a devoted family man, placing the needs of others above himself. Throughout his life, he possessed a strong interest in learning and exploring new ideas. He was active in the First United Methodist Church of Kalamazoo. Also surviving are four sons, Lary (and spouse Cindy), Darwin, Christopher (and spouse Frances) and Jonathan (and spouse Debra); eight grandchildren; eight siblings: Harley (and spouse Elizabeth), William (and spouse Beverly), John, James, Elizabeth (and spouse Jack) Scruggs, Rosemary (and spouse John) Zook, Frances (and spouse Eric) Schiller and Ruth (and spouse John) Hooley; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death a brother, George Stieglitz. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Kalamazoo. Following refreshments at the church, burial with military honors will take place at 2:30 p.m. at Fort Custer Cemetery, Battle Creek, Mich. Calling is one hour prior to the service Wednesday.
