MENTONE - LaVera M. Utter, 96, of 7431 W. Ind. 25, Mentone, and formerly of Athens, died at 5:30 a.m. March 12, 2011, in her residence.
She was born June 12, 1914, in Fulton County, to Russel and Arlean Norris Walters, who preceded her in death. On Sept. 3, 1933, in Rochester, she married Wilbert R. Utter, who died Jan. 4, 2004.
She was a homemaker and traditional farmer's wife. She had also been a cook at the Colonial Hotel and several other places around the Rochester area and worked at Hart Schaffner & Marx, Rochester. She was a member of Talma United Methodist Church. She enjoyed the many great times she had while being a member of the Talma Home Economics Club. She graduated from Talma High School in 1932. She was a great seamstress and was known for her fine finish sewing.
Surviving are two daughters, Sue Curtis, Warsaw, and Luanne (and spouse Jim) May, Columbia City; a son, Richard Utter, Mentone; 13 grandchildren; several great- and great-great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two sons, James R. Utter, who passed away in the Vietnam War and Ronnie Utter; a great-grandson, Ryan Utter; a sister; and two brothers.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at King Memorial Home, Mentone, with Pastor Joe Lampton officiating. Burial will be in Akron Cemetery.
