LARWILL - Harold Brower, member of the Larwill Town Council, was recently chosen "Citizen of the Year" by his Larwill neighbors.
"I was quite surprised," he said Tuesday. "I'm honored, but there's people here deserves it a lot more than I do."
A 35-year resident of Larwill, Brower has served on the town council for slightly more than one year. He has a reputation for getting things done, and he and his wife of 51 years, Grace, are well known for making and giving away about 200 pounds of candy each year.
Marietta Snyder, Brower's neighbor and a former town council member, read a tribute to Brower, compiled of comments made on the ballots that determined his award.
The comments included: "For 1997, Larwill has a citizen who does not give up. When anyone needs anything, one phone call is all that is necessary. He may handle the situation with a phone call or a court date, but handle it he will. ... "Husband, father, grandfather, neighbor, diplomat, farmer, real estate broker, car salesman, world traveler, armed forces veteran and resident of Larwill for almost 40 years - we are all living in a happier and better community because of our 'Citizen of the Year.' "
Brower said as a town council member he tries to keep the public informed of all council action. He also said his priority as a council member "is to clean this town up and to try to get the juvenile situation here in hand."
Brower was chosen citizen of the year over seven other nominated residents.
He and Grace have three daughters, one of whom is the town clerk, and one son.
