SOUTH WHITLEY – On March 21, John Langmaid IV was awarded his Eagle Scout rank at a ceremony held at Whitko High School. Langmaid, a student at the high school, planned, surveyed, organized and helped build a 65-foot long by 5-foot wide Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalk during July 2012 for the school as his Eagle Scout Project, and earned the Eagle rank Sept. 13. The sidewalk already has been a great asset to both the school and the Resource Department. The sidewalk gives the disabled students greater access to the school and greater ease to leave the school during exercise and emergency situations. Langmaid joined South Whitley’s Pack 3085 in 2004 as a Tiger Cub Scout and has advanced through every rank, earning his Arrow of Light and Webelo’s Super Achiever awards in 2008. From 2009 to 2013, Langmaid served as Boy Scout den chief to Pack 3085, acting as a mentor to the Cubs and an assistant leader to the adult den leader. Langmaid earned his Den Chief Service Award in 2010. In 2011 Langmaid was inducted as an Ordeal member of scouting’s honor society, the Order of the Arrow. In 2012, he advanced to Brotherhood membership in the Order of the Arrow, as well as earning the World Conservation Award. Additionally, after a year of study he earned the God and Country religious award in December. Langmaid continues to remain active in Scouting, has currently earned 55 merit badges, and will be attending the 2013 National Jamboree at the new Bechtel Scout Reservation in West Virginia as the Order of the Arrow representative for the Anthony Wayne Area Council.
