Lancers Spikers Take Cedarville Tourney

Posted

CEDARVILLE, OH - The Grace College women's volleyball team went 5-1 and captured first place at the Cedarville Tournament this weekend.

It was the team's first matches of the season.

The Lady Lancers began by facing host Cedarville and pulled out a five-game victory, 15-10, 4-15, 10-15, 15-7, 15-5. Freshman Kate Millen had 20 kills while senior Molly Maidment added 12 in the win. Millen and Leslie Estep combined for 23 blocks.

The next match was against the University of Indianapolis and the Lancers pulled out a 14-16, 15-12, 16-14, 15-4 win. Millen again led the Lancers with 23 kills while Mandy Ringhand added 18 and Maidment 13. Saturday morning, the Lancers began with Indiana Wesleyan, and Grace won in three games, 15-13, 15-11, 15-4. Millen recorded 26 kills.

Against St. Francis in the following match, the Lady Lancers won 15-2, 5-15, 15-9, 15-7. Millen again led the team with 16 kills, Maidment had 15, and Kelli Irish had 12. Rants and Millen led the defense with 13 digs each.

Grace then topped Urbana 15-10, 15-8, 15-11. Leading in kills against Urbana were Kate Millen and Kelli Irish with 12 and 10 respectively. Molly Maidment had seven aces.

In the Lancers' final game of the tournament, they fell to Findlay 7-15, 11-15, 15-5, 9-15. By that time, the Lancers were without several starters because of the grueling two days. Millen had 24 kills and 10 blocks in the loss. Kelli Irish and Maidment led the defense with 20 and 16 digs.

Both Cedarville and Grace had finished the round-robin tournament at 5-1, and since the Lancers had beaten Cedarville, they brought home the first place trophy.

"We're not dominating anything, we're just pulling it out," says coach Candace Moats. "We're truly competitors out there."

The Lady Lancers will travel to Tri-State on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
